Celebrating Richard Gutsell: 2024 Match Official of the Year

Lincolnshire FA is proud to announce Richard Gutsell as the recipient of the 2024 Match Official of the Year award

Lincolnshire FA is proud to announce Richard Gutsell as the recipient of the 2024 Match Official of the Year award.

Richard’s journey into officiating began in 2015 when he was managing a local village football team in Lincolnshire. At that time, a requirement for team managers was to have completed the 'Recognised Referee' course to step in when a referee was unavailable. This necessity ignited Richard’s passion for refereeing, which has grown immensely over the years.

After covering numerous matches for various teams—even after his own team disbanded due to player transitions—Richard decided to formalize his training. In the summer of 2021, he completed the Lincolnshire FA referee training course and earned his qualification. Since then, he has become a dedicated and influential match official within the local football community.

Richard has particularly enjoyed officiating in the Ability Counts League, which he describes as a rewarding experience. “While I thoroughly enjoy refereeing non-disability football, the Ability Counts League brought so much more personal reward for me,” he shares. “I felt like I was giving something back while supporting and encouraging the teams. The players, despite their varying disabilities, played with immense passion and determination, showcasing their love for the game.”

His commitment to disability football didn't stop there. After expressing interest in officiating more inclusive football, Richard was connected with Cerebral Palsy Football, further expanding his officiating journey. He officiates in leagues that meet monthly in Northampton and Sheffield, culminating in exciting end-of-year cup finals, including the prestigious FA Disability Cup at St George's Park. Last season, he had the honor of being the third official in the televised cup final between Norwich City and North East & Yorkshire, a highlight in his officiating career.

When asked about his experience, Richard emphasises the importance of inclusion in football. “There are so many different types of inclusion football and disability leagues that are vital to these communities and need support,” he states. “Refereeing this format of the game gives you a real sense of purpose, and you truly feel included as part of a wider community family. I encourage any referee to offer their support where they can; you would be surprised by the number of leagues and teams involved.”

Lincolnshire FA extends its heartfelt congratulations to Richard Gutsell for this well-deserved recognition. His dedication to the game and commitment to inclusivity are exemplary, serving as an inspiration to officials and players alike. Declan Ford, Referee Development Manager at Lincolnshire FA, said: “Richard embodies the true spirit of officiating, showing immense dedication not only to the game but also to creating an inclusive environment for all players. His commitment to the Ability Counts League and other disability football initiatives has had a profound impact on both the players and the community. We are incredibly proud to recognise Richard as our Match Official of the Year, and his journey serves as an inspiring example for referees at all levels.”

The Lincolnshire FA Grassroots Football Awards Ceremony is set for Friday 18th October 2024 at Forest Pines Hotel, Spa, and Golf Resort.
